This figure is based on the characters first established in the children’s books of Florence Kate Upton, an American-born English cartoonist and author most famous for creating a character based on her aunt's golly. Upton was born in 1873 and created stories based on the golly and her penny wooden dolls. Her first book “The Adventure of Two Dutch Dolls” was published for Christmas 1895. Upton died in 1922.
The original golly and Dutch Dolls resided for many years at Chequers, the Prime Minister's country estate in Buckinghamshire. They are now at the V&A Museum of Childhood in London.
