Albert Schoenhut was a third generation wood carver, born in Germany, who established his toy factory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1872 for making wood toys; his first toy was a piano.  It's believed the first dolls copyrighted in 1903 were for the Humpty Dumpty Circus including lady and gentleman acrobats, lion tamer, lady circus rider and a ringmaster.

This is a rare and complete Schoenhut boxed reduced size Humpty Dumpty circus set comprising a horse and donkey with painted eyes, ringmaster in red felt jacket with top hat and cane, lady rider with composition head wearing green top with gold braid detailing and pink skirt, clown with geometric pattern suit and red boat feet along with off white ladder and chair and red, white and blue barrel. The items were originally tied onto backing card with Humpty Dumpty Circus label - most still are. All contained in lidded box with beautiful colour illustrated original label to lid and black & white printed set No. 21/24 end label. Box measures 44 x 31 x 7 cms / 17.25 x 12 x 2.75 inches. For scale, ring master measures 17.5 cms / 7 inches high

all figures in very good original condition with some minor paint loss and light staining plus the donkey's strings are severed in the neck area so needs to be restrung. Box is complete but in fair to good condition with sides and corners taped but metal corner reinforcements still present. Lid label is complete and bright with some minor water staining. Side label is virtually complete with edge nibbles and staining
